Capital Campaign: Land Ahoy!

The vision requires land first: the target is in sight and with your help we can reach it! Thanks to Rainer Muenter of Selkirk Mountain Forest Ltd. (SMFL) and their local forester, Jesse Coplin, we have almost cleared that hurdle.

On September 1 2023, TINSHS launched our Capital Campaign to raise funds for the purchase of land and associated costs as well as a geotechnical assessment, initial access, site preparation and the beginning infrastructure for utilities. Please donate online or directly to our Capital Campaign account at the First Credit Union and help us get our seniors housed.

History

Over the last year, TINSHS has been in consultation with SMFL and we have a signed agreement to acquire eight acres of land within the Gillies Bay Improvement District between the Gillies Bay and Airport Rd. They have generously agreed to donate 80% of the assessed land value of $177,500, resulting in a donated value of $142,000. Currently the land is within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). The qathet Regional District is in support of the exclusion of these eight acres from the ALR for seniors housing. The application and recommendation for ALR exclusion is being prepared by SMFL in collaboration with the qRD. Community donations have paid for soil sampling required by the ALR.

While we have been actively grant writing to cover a variety of project costs, land purchase is out of scope for the vast majority of funders. Acquiring this land is a key step in enabling our seniors to age in place with dignity and security, surrounded by a supportive network of family and friends, helping to ensure a healthy and thriving island community for all.

Together we can do this!
